Join Nick Yates (saxophone) and Iran Sanadzadeh (pressure-sensitive floors) in the premiere performances of their intimate and immersive new work, Face to Face. Inspired by ideas of reflection, the relationship between movement and sound, and the meeting points between acoustic and electronic music, they improvise new sound worlds between their musical traditions.
In Face to Face, gestures and sounds are imitated, recorded, and reproduced, but unison and repetition seem just out of reach. Through this search, new sounds and moments of beauty emerge.
Nick and Iran perform with live, pre-recorded, and synthesised sounds. Environmental field recordings from both the Top End and Adelaide give the work a playful sense of place.
Nick Yates is a saxophonist, composer, and improviser with a passion for new music. He is artistic director of Whistling Kite New Music, and also plays with The Changes, The Djäri Project, Arafura Music Collective and DSO.
Iran Sanadzadeh continues the pioneering legacy of dancer and choreographer Philippa Cullen on the pressure-sensitive floors, using modern technology to expand the possibilities of Cullen’s invention and examine the relationship between movement and sound. She was Artistic Director and Lead Composer for Utter, awarded Best Dance Work by the Advertiser at the 2021 Adelaide Fringe Festival. These are her debut performances in the NT.
Nick and Iran met and first collaborated at the Australian Art Orchestra’s Creative Music Intensive in December 2020. Their first release as a duo was Marbled Sky.
