Art in Times of Survival: The Role of Art In Uncharted Territory
2020 has brought fire, drought, pandemic and riots … and it’s only halfway done with us! With mass life-altering events occuring in break-neck succession, all layers of government are struggling to retain hold of the social reigns.
Treated as a fair-weather pursuit, a pleasant but ultimately inconsequential embellishment to the public budget, the arts has found itself the loser within recovery plans time and time over. This is despite the fact that it is the arts keeping us sane as we are quarantined at home for months, that it is the healing power of art and culture which builds us up and keeps us strong, that it is the arts which has made comprehensible the overwhelming issues of our time in a way no other medium can to connect with audiences on the most personal and intimate of levels.
Join Darwin Free University as we hear from five key Northern Territorian artists and arts workers as they answer the question – how is the arts essential to our survival, now and into the future? What role does it play and what role should it play? And how do we fight for its recognition and resourcing going into these uncertain times? Hear from five local artists and arts workers as they lend us their unique suggestions and vital ideas, followed by a Q & A session where we need to hear from you, the NT community, on how we make creative recovery our central project.
DFU & DFF acknowledges the Larrakia People as the guardians of the land on which we create, play and love. We recognise their continued connection with the land, sea, sky and fire. This discussion will take place on unceded Larrakia lands, we respectfully acknowledge Larrakia Elders past, present and becoming.
