Alice Cotton and Bambadino
A triple bill of live music, with headliner Alice Cotton and support from Mparntwe artist Bambadino, plus a special Fringe performance from Darwin’s own LGBTQIA+ choir, the True Colours Chorus. Arrive early to watch Nightcliff’s spectacular sunsets and enjoy a picnic dinner on the venue’s grassy lawns.
Growing up in Australia’s tropical north, Darwin artist Alice Cotton’s honeyed vocals and quirky lyrics ‘hit you with the depth and breadth of her storytelling’ (Nkechi Anele, triple j). A finalist for the inaugral Australian Folk Music Awards, Alice’s songs are intimate and playful narrations of contemporary queer relationships, family dogs, and a constant daydream of food.
Bambadino is a filipino-born lesbian maths teacher singer-songwriter who writes songs about life, love and bellies. She’s lived in Mpartnwe/Alice Springs for 8 years and plans to live there forever. In her spare time she likes to cuddle her dogs and make roo ragu.
True Colours Chorus is the Top End’s first LGBTQIA+ chorus. The group was originally conceived of, in late 2017, as an inclusive choir for members of the City and Greater Region of Darwin’s gender and sexually-diverse community and its allies – a creative community meeting place and an opportunity to positively increase the visibility of the LGBTIQA+ community of Darwin.
About the artists
Growing up in Australia’s tropical north, Darwin artist Alice Cotton’s honeyed vocals and quirky lyrics ‘hit you with the depth and breadth of her storytelling’ (Nkechi Anele, triple j). Cotton has been compared to Aussie music legends Paul Kelly and Stella Donnelly by triple j, and she collaborated with industry heavy-weights Matt Cunliffe (Yothu Yindi) and Gormie (Angie McMahon) on her 2021 independent debut release Sleeping Dogs. The track garnerned national radio-play, including a triple j premiere, and was featured in Tone Deaf’s top Australian music picks for community radio. A finalist for the inaugural Australian Folk Music Awards, Cotton was highly commended for an NT Arts Access Award. Her film-clip for Sleeping Dogs, featuring an Auslan interpreter, was a finalist for 2021 Fist Full of Films’ Music Video Award.
